Top Tips for the Perfect Spray Tan
1. Selecting your Salon
Choose a salon that specialises in Spray Tans and are performing them on a daily basis – practice makes perfect and like anything, the more you do of something, the better you get.
Check what brand the salon uses and if it sounds like a good one (e.g. is it a well-known established tanning brand, do they have wash n’wear express tan treatments, does their spray tan include argan oil for hydration and a longer lasting tan, and even whether organic ingredients are used).
2. Before your Tan
Ensure a good exfoliation in the week leading up to your spray tan (and at a minimum at least once the day before) as this will help smooth your skin by removing dead skin cells and flaky skin. You can exfoliate using a body scrub, a loofah, exfoliating gloves or a buffing cloth. We personally recommend the Pure Fiji Body Scrub and Dermalogica Ultimate Buffing Cloth.
If you normally wax, make sure you do this at least 1 to 2 days before your tanning treatment. If you shave, make sure this is done the day beforehand also.
Do not apply any moisturisers, fragrances or deodorant on the day of your spray tan as these can form a barrier to the spray tan solution and will reduce the ability to apply an even colour all over.
Wear loose, dark clothes to your appointment as you don’t want anything tight that will rub where the tan is developing on your skin. For females – if you can go without a bra afterward for a couple of hours, all the better.
Bring jandals or similar open-toed shoes to wear afterward.
3. After Your Tan
Avoid washing your hands following your treatment until the 2 hour mark has been reached.
No getting hot and sweaty for 8 hours after your tan has been applied (great excuse to not go for that run!).
Wait 2-8 hours after the spray tan has been applied before you shower – the longer you leave it, the darker the tan will develop (do not leave on for longer than 8 hours or you may risk over-processing the colour).
Until you shower, wear loose baggy clothes to ensure the tan can develop freely and not be rubbed off by tight waistbands or bra straps.
Once you have showered, the bronzer will rinse away and the tan will continue to develop over 12-24 hours.
After showering the key to making your tan last is hydration:
Use a rich body moisturiser twice a day if you can and avoid shower gels with any fruit acids or soap which are likely to strip moisture from the skin
Consider a gradual tan moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and the colour topped up for an even longer lasting tan.
